Echuca is located along the banks of the Murray River in Victoria, it’s twin town Moama is on the NSW side of the river.
We love visiting as it’s like no other place we know. It has a very relaxed country feel and a true Aussie vibe. It's a great place to get in touch with the culture and heritage of our beautiful country.
Think gums trees lining the idyllic river, with kookaburras perched on their branches. They are laughing and watching the sleepy paddle steamers cruise up and down the river. It’s quite a dreamy scene.
Historically, it dates back to the 1850’s when Henry Hopwood founded the town with the purchase of a punt that operated across the river at the height of industry. Wool, wheat, other grains, livestock, and timber were the most common commodities transported to Echuca and onto Melbourne by train. The wharf itself is listed as a ‘Heritage place’ on the Australian National heritage list.
Echuca became the largest inland port in Australia, second only to the Port of Melbourne. Like many bustling and successful towns in its time, breweries and brothels boomed. It’s history is very compelling with tales of historical significance shaping the Aussie character. An underground bar with secret exit, well known street fights and people as famous as Ned Kelly are all part of the history of this iconic town. We heard many of the towns stories on an after dark tour booked through the Port of Echuca discovery centre. Many parts of the old town are said to be haunted, so you might even spot some of the spirits from the past. That’s if your lucky!
We have returned to Echuca many times, it’s a perfect weekend getaway from Melbourne, or a great place to spend a few weeks. Popular with campers, water skiers, and those who love boating and fishing. You won’t have to rough it in the bush if you don’t want to though. There are a number of great places to stay ranging from the popular free camps to 5 star hotels. For something a little different you can even stay on a paddle steamer or hire a luxury house boat. Our last visit we stayed at the Rich River tourist park as it was a short drive into town, and they welcomed our dog.
???????
There are also a lot of great restaurants and eateries that get rave reviews. The pub scene is very prominent in this town, at one stage there were more than 100 pubs or hotels that were rumored to exist, now days there is still a significant 8. Having tested out a couple ourselves i don’t think you can go wrong with any for a great meal and beverage.
A big recommendation under things to do there would be getting out on the Murray River in any way you can. You can book a paddle steamer ride through the Port of Echuca discovery centre or perhaps hire your own boat or canoe from the Victoria park boat ramp. The river is a big part of this town and a large reason why people are drawn to this region. Annually, the southern 80 water ski race is hosted here which attracts a massive crowd over the duration of a few days.
Make sure you explore the Port of Echuca itself as it is very interesting. They have it set up like it would have been during its heyday with horse and cart rides down the Main Street, a blacksmith, lolly shop etc. Its like you have stepped back in time.
You’ll also find a Holden Museum, a beer shed, a winery, a Billabong ranch and a number of places to keep you busy no matter what your interests are. I highly recommend you visit this special little town on the banks of the mighty Murray at some stage in your life.
